President Moon Si-Yeun Leads 120th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign with 120 Million KRW Donation
Sookmyung Women’s University has officially launched a large-scale fundraising campaign in anticipation of its 120th founding anniversary in 2026. University President Moon Si-yeun became the first donor to the campaign, contributing 120 million KRW (85,000 USD) and setting a meaningful example as the inaugural participant. The donation ceremony was held on Monday, September 8, at the university’s Administration Building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, marking the official start of the “Sookmyung 120th Anniversary Development Fundraising Campaign.” President Moon remarked, “I hope this campaign will bring together the hearts of faculty, alumni, students, and all members of the Sookmyung community. As president, I wanted to take the lead by making the first donation myself.” Starting with President Moon’s contribution, Sookmyung is rolling out four major fundraising programs: Proud Sookmyung 120 Campaign, Alumni Lecture Hall Campaign, Loving and Proud Alumni Campaign, New Snowflake Bench Campaign. The university aims to introduce a variety of donation options and lower barriers to participation, encouraging more faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters both within and outside the university to join in advancing Sookmyung’s development. The “Proud Sookmyung 120 Campaign” invites donations of 120,000 KRW, 1.2 million KRW, 12 million KRW, or 120 million KRW, symbolizing the university’s 120-year history. Funds raised through this initiative will support the education of talented students, the enhancement of educational and research capacity, and the creation of a future-ready campus, which are core priorities for the university’s next stage of growth. The “Alumnae Lecture Hall Campaign” encourages donations of 50 million KRW or more from colleges, departments, and alumni clubs to establish lecture halls named after the donor groups. A commemorative plaque will be installed outside each lecture hall, while a donor board inside will list the names and affiliations of contributors. The 6th floor of Myungshin Hall will be designated as the Alumni Lecture Hall zone in the future. The “Loving and Proud Alumni Campaign” aims to inspire alumni giving under the theme “Sookmyung love grows deeper over time.” Graduates are invited to donate an amount calculated by multiplying 10,000 KRW by the number of years between their graduation year and the university’s 120th anniversary in 2026, turning personal history into a meaningful contribution. The “New Snowflake Bench Campaign” allows donors to leave a lasting mark on the campus benches. For a donation of 3 million KRW, a donor’s name and message will be engraved on a new bench installed on Sookmyung’s Campus 2, offering both a commemorative and visible symbol of support. President Moon Si-yeun reflected on the anniversary’s significance, stating, “Sookmyung Women’s University was founded in 1906 by Queen Sunheon of the Korean Empire during a national crisis, with the vision of saving the country through women’s education. As we approach our 120th anniversary in 2026 under the slogan ‘Pride of Sookmyung, the Next 120 Years,’ we aim to lay the foundation for our next great leap forward.”
